ESRC Festival of Social Sciences Event ā€“ Numbers in Everyday Life!

October 2022

Brief

This in-person event was hosted for families with children of preschool and early primary school age, Early Years education practitioners, Primary school teachers, Local Education Authority representatives and Academics. It explored our recent research on how preschool children understand the multiple meanings and social uses of written numbers. The first hour included an interactive presentation and video montage. This was followed by an exciting 30-minute outdoor number hunt. The event finished with a 30-minute interactive session on enhancing childrenā€™s interest about numbers.

What people said about what they might change as parents as a result of familyā€™s experience at the event:

ā€œI feel that social number skills would be a huge benefit to all children because not all children have the opportunities to have social numbers explained to them. ā€¦ the study has made me realise how we learn and learn to decodeā€

ā€Teaching numbers as part of everyday life along with maths, would help children understand the world and make numbers more interestingā€

ā€œDo more number and symbol hunting with my daughter and with other kids. This helps us to make sense of the community and culture understanding (as we are new to the country) šŸ˜Šā€

ā€œStart noticing and discussing numbers with my girls which Iā€™d otherwise taken for granted as an adult i.e. from a childā€™s point of viewā€

ā€œI’ll do more number hunting with my kidsā€

ā€œUnderstanding that my role / understanding of numbers will not necessarily be know by my child and the need to explain moreā€
