Number Spotting Game

In our projects, the Number Spotting Game has become a key tool, both as a participatory research method and to mediate and support adult-child interactions about numbers in the world around them.

This fun and easy game can be played as part of everyday life routines and aims to:

• Draw children’s attention to numbers as a feature of the world around them

• Foster children’s curiosity about numbers and awareness of the multiple meanings and uses of written numbers in everyday life

• Enable families (which includes older children) to share the social and cultural knowledge they already have about the role of numbers in everyday life and the messages that they communicate, with their young children

Some feedback from families on the Number Spotting Game

Here are a selection of quotes about the Number Spotting Game

“We only used to think about adding and counting and now we see numbers all around us and explain more about what the numbers we see mean. We have changed our thinking about the relationship with numbers and it isn’t just about counting.”

“I found it fascinating that actually Isaiah’s sister, at 8 (year 3) – didn’t seem to be much more aware of what uses and why numbers were on things than Isaiah did. It’s definitely opened my eyes to explaining things more!”

“We have much more conversations on our walks and when driving. Not just lead by myself but Harper and his brother too.”
