What we do

The difference we make

Maths in Childrenā€™s Worlds is a portfolio of research in Early Childhood Mathematics Learning conducted at the University of Southampton, UK, in collaboration with national and international research partners. We work in close collaboration with Early Years Educational settings and Primary Schools at local, national and international level.

Ā

Exploring how young children develop their early ideas about mathematics is important for developing evidence-based teaching approaches, practices, and resources that aim to best support young childrenā€™s mathematics learning and development.

Ā

In our work, we focus on research that examines early mathematics learning in formal settings, such as Early Years and Primary school classrooms, as well as the knowledge of mathematics ideas that children develop informally, as part of their everyday experiences at home and as participants in different community and cultural settings.

We aim to:

Ā

ā€¢ Produce research evidence that offers in-depth insights of young childrenā€™s early mathematical learning and thinking.

Ā

ā€¢ Understand how childrenā€™s awareness and understanding of early mathematics concepts develops in the context of their everyday experiences inside and outside the classroom.

Ā

ā€¢ Co-design with school partners, trial and evaluate the impact of evidence-based, sustainable resources that:

Ā

a) Foster young childrenā€™s curiosity about mathematical ideas and enhance their early mathematics learning

Ā

b) Enable connections between childrenā€™s mathematics informal experiences and their learning of mathematics at preschool and school
